Since 1995 the Danks Davis tutoring programme, founded by Aucklander Zannie Danks Davis, addresses literacy for people with dyslexia and a range of other learning difficulties throughout New Zealand.

The programme is a different way of structuring reading and spelling, making it easier for students with dyslexia to understand. Its effectiveness has been shown by independent psychologists using standardised tests, such as WISC IV.

Tuition provides unique strategies for learning and involves:

· One hour lessons, once a week @ circa $50 per session – most sessions are in the morning

· Most students complete 40-45 sessions per year and most need 18 months – 2 years, no homework

· Looks at the written word through new and creative ways.

· Secondary students are before school/Saturday, primary are during school (entitled under Education Act)

· Incorporates kinesiology and multifaceted learning.

· Teaches to the student’s individual strengths.

· Teaches to the student’s preferred learning style.

· Tutoring occurs in a relaxed, fun, and safe learning environment.
· Immediate success through achievement from the very first lesson.

· Strengthens auditory and visual processing.

· Improves learning across the curriculum.

· Proven for learners from 6 years old, including adults.

Zannie Danks Davis, who has dyslexia herself, designed the programme to help people with dyslexia. Zannie is a past President of SPELD (Auckland), a past Vice President of SPELD (New Zealand), and is a life member of SPELD. These roles led Zannie, along with Phillip Crockford, to bring Educational Kinesiology (Brain Gym) into New Zealand.

Zannie took her skills and understanding of dyslexia and became a Supervisor to high-risk offenders aged 11-17 years for a behaviour modification programme. In this role Zannie realised most of frustrations and behaviours of offenders were manifestations of unaddressed dyslexic tendencies, and she saw the urgent need to reconnect them to learning. This is where Zannie developed her programme. Danks Davis delivers holistic and multisensory approach to teaching and learning.

Zannie then started an independent business tutoring students with dyslexia. Endorsements from students, parents, and psychologists resulted in Zannie training more tutors in her method to meet the increasing demand.

Testimony:

About 8 years ago our significantly dyslexic son was given a MRI brain scan for dyslexics – to find the differences to non-dyslexics in the areas being investigated. Our son had been assessed as highly dyslexic because of the significant differences between his learning abilities. By the time he had the brain scan, he had been through Zannie’s [Danks Davis] tutoring, which had made a real difference to him. It was a pity that there was no “before tuition MRI” in our son’s case – his scan showed up as functioning as a non-dyslexic! Research has shown that when a student receives support using words of language in context with phonetics you can get such changes to a non-dyslexic pathway form.”
